Once a character begins to take shape I tend to come up with some basic concepts, but that evolves and changes as I figure out who the character is while writing them. I never really try and force a backstory. If the name doesn’t fit, I just sit there and stare at the screen until the cogs in my brain churn out the correct name.Īs for the backstory, that tends to be something that comes naturally. I’m not one of those people who can leave a placeholder name and move on. When I was starting out, I often used random name generators just to get ideas, but then as I developed a feel for the different cultures and races, the names started to flow a lot easier.
